Cables used for Voice over IP applications have to be installed using the same standards as data networks because the telephone system acts as a server, just like your data network servers. The telephone sets are network appliances just like your PCs. Therefore, cabling needs to be terminated in the Telecommunications Closet on a patch panel. And VoIP phone connections at the faceplates must use the wider, RJ-45 data jack standard, not the narrower RJ-11 jacks used for standard telephone connections.
